Here's a bit about our story:

In the last few weeks, we've talked to several people in their 50s who are unexpectedly in the job market. It's happening, a shift that we haven't seen since the Great Recession.

That's why I'm sharing this story. Back in 2008, I was chairing a journalistic conference in New York with a friend. Social media was sneaking up on us, but many participants were completely unaware that Facebook was opening its forces to everyone, not just college students. It was a seismic shift in the world and specifically in the world of news.

So, there I was meeting with editors about potential books to write. An editor from Penguin saw something in me that I didn't see in myself that day. It was the fact that I’d written several books about big personal brands—Martha Stewart, Oprah, Katie Couric and more.

Within a week, I was given a contract, which I would share with my partner, to write a book called this: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Branding Yourself. (Ray had written about some of the biggest corporate brands of that time.)

Writing that book changed our lives. We reshaped our professional brands -- by examining our successes and our skill sets -- and we rode out the recession like professional surfers during a tsunami. Yes, that was a tsunami and we're having another right now. We were in our early 50s during the Great Recession.

So why share this story now? Because in the heat of an economic or industry downturn, it's really difficult to identify and appreciate all of your skills. We've decided that if you're in this situation, we are happy to talk. We can boost your confidence and help you figure out the next steps in your career.
